Leeds gave further trials to Hayden Foxe and also Danny Senda and included youngsters Robert Bayly and Ian Morris in the starting eleven. Gylfi Einarsson opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute before being replaced by youngster Sam Hird a minute later. Although the Icelander's goal was cancelled out by a stunning volley from Fabio Degenti nafter fifty five minutes, in the end it was United's superior fitness levels that was the telling factor in the closing stages. Although Darlington made many changes throughout the game, even with their fresh legs leeds outlasted them and the margin could have been greater. United's only second half substitutes were Scott Gardner for Ian Morris on the hour mark and Simon Madden for Danny Senda twelve minutes later. Jermaine Beckford got two goals, the first in the seventieth minute and the second just five minutes later as United threatened to run riot in the last half hour. While he did not score, his striking partner Robbie Blake was always a source of concern for the home team and terrorized the home defence all night. It was from his free-kick that Hayden Foxe got the fourth goal to wrap up the game in the final stages. Mark Wilberforce, Jonathan Howson and Bailey Camfield remained unused on the Leeds bench.
